FUNDED IVF - ONTARIO FERTILITY PROGRAM (OFP)

Funded IVF in Ontario—A Complete Guide for Patients

If you're exploring IVF in Ontario, you may already know that the province offers funded cycles through the Ontario Fertility Program (OFP).

What you might not know is that at Pollin Fertility, there is no waitlist for funded IVF. You can start the process today.

This guide explains who qualifies, what a funded cycle covers, what you'll pay out of pocket, and exactly what to expect at Pollin — so you can make a clear-eyed decision about your next step.

What Is the Ontario Fertility Program?

The Ontario Fertility Program (OFP) is a provincial government initiative that funds one IVF cycle for eligible Ontario residents.

The program is designed to make IVF accessible to people who might not otherwise be able to afford it, and it covers the core IVF procedure regardless of relationship status, sexual orientation, or gender identity.

Pollin Fertility is a fully registered OFP provider. We accept patients through the program and have no waitlist for funded cycles.

Am I Eligible for a Funded IVF Cycle?

To qualify for a funded IVF cycle through the Ontario Fertility Program, you must meet all of the following:

  • Ontario residency — You must be an Ontario resident with a valid Ontario health card (OHIP)
  • Age — You must be under 43 years of age at the time of the funded cycle
  • No prior funded cycle — You must not have previously used a government-funded IVF cycle in Ontario
  • Clinical eligibility — Your Pollin physician will assess your individual clinical situation to confirm you meet program criteria

Other Eligibility Criteria at Pollin

There is no minimum or maximum AMH (ovarian reserve) requirement to book a consultation at Pollin. If your AMH is very low, your physician will discuss your results and your realistic options with you honestly.

There is no BMI cutoff for a consultation at Pollin. However, if a procedure requires sedation and your BMI falls outside the safe range for anaesthesia, your physician will have a frank conversation with you about how to proceed — including the option to complete the procedure without sedation in some cases.

Not sure if you qualify? Book a priority consultation. We'll confirm your eligibility and walk you through everything.

What Does a Funded IVF Cycle Cover?

A funded IVF cycle covers the core IVF procedure, which includes ovarian stimulation monitoring, egg retrieval, fertilization, and embryo culture.

It does not cover everything. Patients should budget for:

  • Fertility medications — approximately $6,000–$8,000
  • Genetic testing (PGT-A) — optional but recommended in some cases; priced separately
  • Additional lab services — certain add-ons, such as sperm freezing or immune protocols, are not included
  • Embryo storage — annual storage fees apply if embryos are banked

Your Pollin care team will give you a complete, itemized cost breakdown at your consultation. There are no surprises.

What Is Not Covered Under the OFP at Pollin?

The Ontario Fertility Program at Pollin funds IVF cycles only. The following are not covered under the OFP:

  • Egg freezing or sperm freezing for fertility preservation
  • IUI (intrauterine insemination) cycles
  • Embryo banking as a standalone procedure (discuss with your physician if this is your goal)

Can I Transfer My OFP Eligibility From Another Clinic to Pollin?

Yes — but timing matters. You can transfer your OFP eligibility to Pollin before you begin any treatment at the other clinic. This means no priming, no stimulation, and no cycle start of any kind.

Once treatment has begun at another clinic, the eligibility is tied to that clinic and cannot be transferred to Pollin. If you're currently registered with another clinic but haven't started treatment yet, contact us as soon as possible to discuss your options.

Who Is Not a Good Fit for Pollin Right Now?

We believe in being honest with patients upfront — it saves everyone time and ensures you get the right care.

Pollin does not see patients in the following situations:

  • Active miscarriage — If you are currently miscarrying, we ask that you allow time to heal before booking. We are happy to see you a couple of months after your miscarriage has resolved.
  • Active cycle at another clinic — We cannot see patients who are currently mid-cycle at another fertility clinic.
  • Pregnant from treatment at another clinic — If you achieved a pregnancy through treatment elsewhere, ongoing care should remain with that clinic.
  • Gynecological issues — Pollin is a reproductive endocrinology and fertility clinic. If you have an active gynecological concern (fibroids, polyps, etc.), please see a gynecologist first. Your Pollin physician can help guide next steps once those are addressed.

If any of these apply to you, we're not going anywhere. Reach out when the timing is right and we'll be ready for you.

Frequently Asked Questions About Funded IVF in Ontario

Does Pollin have a waitlist for funded IVF?

No. Pollin Fertility has no waitlist for government-funded IVF cycles. You can book a priority consultation and begin the process immediately.

Do I need a referral to book at Pollin?

No referral is required. If you have a GP you can send them the referral form located on our website HERE.

If you do not have a GP, this is not an issue, once you book your appointment, a member from our team will schedule an OHIP-covered, virtual appointment with our partner GP to create one for you.

Can same-sex couples and single individuals access funded IVF?

Yes. The Ontario Fertility Program is available to all eligible Ontario residents regardless of relationship status, sexual orientation, or gender identity. Pollin is a fully inclusive clinic.

What if I've already had a failed funded IVF cycle in Ontario?

The OFP provides one funded cycle per eligible patient. If you've already used your funded cycle, additional cycles would be private pay. Your Pollin physician can discuss your options and realistic expectations for subsequent cycles.

What if my cycle fails — when can I try again?

In most cases, patients can begin preparing for a subsequent cycle within one to two menstrual cycles after a failed attempt. Your physician will review what happened and recommend the appropriate next steps.

Is there an income test to qualify for funded IVF?

No. The Ontario Fertility Program does not have an income threshold. Eligibility is based on residency, age, health card status, and clinical criteria only.

How long does it take to get started after my consultation?

Once your OFP eligibility is confirmed, most patients move into their cycle within a few weeks, depending on where they are in their menstrual cycle and any preparatory testing required.

What if I want to bank embryos — can I use my funded cycle for that?

A funded IVF cycle is intended for a single egg retrieval with the aim of a fresh or frozen embryo transfer. Whether your funded cycle can be applied toward an embryo banking goal depends on your clinical situation and OFP guidelines. Discuss your goals with your Pollin physician before proceeding.
