Vitamin D and Your Fertility

What is Vitamin D & why does it matter?
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that can be obtained from foods, supplements, and sun exposure. Most of us are familiar with its role in bone health, but you may not know that there is evidence suggesting that Vitamin D may be important for fertility and pregnancy.
Vitamin D plays an important role in many places throughout the body and can also affect fertility. There are Vitamin D Receptors in our ovaries, uterus and testicles that support the role of Vitamin D in reproduction.
How does Vitamin D impact your fertility?
Various research studies over the last decade have suggested that low Vitamin D levels may be associated with difficult conceiving, pregnancy complications and most recently an increase of miscarriage risk.
What can you do about it?
Vitamin D levels can be easily checked with a blood test. Even though Prenatal Vitamins have Vitamin D, the dose may not be high enough to achieve sufficient blood levels pre-pregnancy.
Vitamin D is known as the “sunshine vitamin”. It is produced in the skin from sun exposure and can be consumed through food and supplements.
Serum Vitamin D levels should be over 75 nmol/l to maximize your odds for ongoing pregnancy.
How to improve your Vitamin D Level
If your Vitamin D level needs to be improved, you will be advised by our team the correct supplementation required for you. Vitamin D is safe to take daily and to continue through to pregnancy and postpartum.
